For schools

Thirty weeks, assuming nothing.

Our curriculum starts from the assumption that no child in the room has ever touched a chess piece — because in most of our schools, that is true.

The shape of a year

Term 1 · Weeks 1–10

The rules, properly

The board, every piece, check and checkmate, stalemate, castling, en passant, promotion. By week ten every child can play a complete legal game unaided.

Term 2 · Weeks 11–20

Tactics and seeing the board

Forks, pins, skewers and discovered attacks. Basic checkmating patterns. Children start noticing threats a move before they land, which is where chess becomes genuinely enjoyable.

Term 3 · Weeks 21–30

Plans and finishing games

Opening principles, king safety, king-and-queen and king-and-rook checkmates, simple pawn endgames. The term ends with an inter-class tournament.

Materials

Each pupil receives a printed workbook for the year, in English, Hindi or the state language. The workbook mirrors the thirty sessions, so a child who misses a week can catch up, and a parent who wants to help can see exactly what is being taught.

Schools receive one tournament chess set per two pupils, a demonstration board for the front of the class, and a coach's manual for the staff we train. All of it belongs to the school from the day it arrives.
