Why chess?
A game that teaches children to think before they act.
There is no shortage of enrichment activities competing for a school's limited time. Here is the honest case for giving one period a week to chess.
Mathematical thinking
Chess is applied pattern recognition. Children who play regularly show measurable gains in spatial reasoning, sequencing and mental arithmetic — the foundations of school mathematics.
Concentration
A single game asks a child to hold a plan in mind for thirty minutes. Teachers consistently tell us that the quietest, most focused period of their week is chess club.
Resilience
Every player loses. Chess gives children a safe, repeatable way to lose, work out why, and try again — and that habit transfers directly to the classroom.
Social skills
Shaking hands before and after a game, playing by agreed rules, winning without gloating. Chess teaches the small courtesies that make a school community work.
A level field
Chess does not care about a family's income, a child's first language, or how well they read. It is one of the few arenas where every pupil starts genuinely equal.
A lifelong game
A child who learns properly at nine can play for the next eighty years — in a park in Chennai, on a phone in Delhi, or across a board with their own grandchildren.

What chess does not do
We think the case for chess is strong enough that it does not need overselling.
Chess does not raise IQ. Studies that claimed it did have largely failed to replicate once researchers controlled properly for the enthusiasm of the teacher and the novelty of the activity.
Nor do the benefits transfer automatically. A child who becomes good at calculating chess variations does not thereby become good at algebra. What does appear to transfer — and what teachers report to us most consistently — are the habits: sitting still, thinking before moving, tolerating the discomfort of a hard problem, and coping with losing.
Those habits are worth a period a week on their own. The research on numeracy gains is genuinely encouraging, and we fund more of it, but we would run this programme even if that evidence disappeared tomorrow.
