Why chess?

The chessboard is a coordinate grid children actually want to use.

Much of what makes early mathematics hard is that it is abstract. Chess makes the same ideas physical, visible and immediately consequential.

Four direct overlaps

Coordinates

Every square has an (x, y) address. Children who find 'plot the point (4, 2)' meaningless have no trouble at all with 'the knight is on e4' — and it is the same skill.

Geometry and symmetry

Diagonals, ranks, files, the rotational symmetry of the starting position, the fixed L of a knight's move. Chess is a two-hour geometry lesson children choose to attend.

Sequencing and if–then reasoning

'If I take there, they recapture, then I have a fork' is conditional logic with immediate feedback. Get it wrong and you lose a rook — which turns out to be a far better motivator than a red tick.

Counting and value

Piece values give children constant, low-stakes practice in comparing quantities. Is a rook and a pawn better than two bishops? That is arithmetic with something at stake.

What we ask teachers to do

The transfer is not automatic. A child does not become better at maths simply by playing chess — the connection has to be made explicit.

So our teacher training spends a full session on exactly this: how to say “this is the same as the coordinate grid we used on Tuesday”, and how to use the demonstration board in a maths lesson rather than only in chess club. Schools that do this report markedly better results than schools that treat chess as a self-contained activity.
